I am excited to inform you about an upcoming online training workshop, free of charge, titled "From Zero to Hero with Python" which will take place on October 17-18, 2024. This workshop is hosted by CECAM-HQ in collaboration with ELIXIR, focusing on enhancing bioinformatics and computational biology skills across the life sciences community.

Description:

This practical introduction to programming will cover all the basic concepts needed to start programming in Python 3. Designed for individuals with limited or no prior programming experience, this workshop will guide you through setting up your programming environment and understanding essential Python concepts, such as variables, loops, and functions. You will also learn how to use popular Python libraries like Pandas and Matplotlib for data manipulation and visualization.

The course is built upon The Carpentries' online learning materials, which have been used in thousands of workshops globally. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to acquire foundational skills in Python programming and data science.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Edit, manage, and run code using Jupyter Notebook
  • Write small programs in Python
  • Use built-in functions and external libraries
  • Work with data using the Pandas library
  • Create data visualizations using Matplotlib
  • Utilize lists, loops, and conditionals in Python
  • Develop simple functions

Requirements:

  • No prior programming or informatics skills required
  • Basic understanding of files and directories
  • A PC/Laptop with an up-to-date browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
  • Python 3 installed on your laptop (installation instructions will be provided upon acceptance)
  • Admin permissions on your PC/Laptop

  • Day 1: Setting up your programming environment, tabular data manipulation, and visualization
  • Day 2: Advanced programming techniques, including lists, loops, and writing functions
